Freemasonry is about

What is Freemasonry?

Many people want to know What is Freemasonry? Put simply Masonry is a fraternal organisation that, in its present form, has been in existence for over 300 years.  Its primary purpose is to make good men better by self-improvement and development, through undergoing allegorical experiences that forge a better understanding about your relationship with your fellow man and highlights the value of leading a moral and upright life.

Freemasonry also encourages you to be charitable of nature, by not only financially supporting worthwhile causes, but also exhibiting such conduct in your daily life.

In these uncertain times, when austerity, social distress and, sometimes, fracturing of local communities feature prominently in our newspapers and on our televisions, it must be reassuring that there is such an organisation that has, as its aim, a clear focus on morality, charity and self-improvement.

Masonry is synonymous with secrecy. This is true, but no more than discovering any other aspect of life. It would be boring if you had all the answers. The truth is Freemasonry is a journey, one that you have control of and gain as much as you are willing to contribute.

Values for today

Over the years, a lot of misinformation has been put around about what is Freemasonry? so what is the truth?  As politics and religion are the greatest causes of disharmony, we are forbidden to discuss these subjects within our meetings.

Freemasonry is not a religion, but you must believe in a Supreme Being – your personal beliefs are for you alone.

Some of our rituals may be considered eccentric and, maybe, even archaic, but their purpose is to make you think and, by thinking, have a greater appreciation of the world about you.

They, usually, leave our members with profound memories that will last a lifetime.

Integrity

Becoming a Freemason and entering into this ancient fraternity will give you a sense of integrity. You are welcomed across the globe to any Lodge once you have achieved the relevant Masonic degree.

Friendship

Brotherly love is a common term in Freemasonry. No matter what political views, religion or background. Freemasons create a sense of brotherhood that is not replicated in any other organisation anywhere in the world.

Respect

Every true Freemason will show tolerance and respect for the opinions of others and behave with kindness and understanding to his fellow creatures.

Charity

Freemasons are taught to practise charity and to care, not only for their own but also for the community as a whole, both by charitable giving and by voluntary efforts and works as individuals.

Getting to know the Freemasons

Freemasonry is, therefore, a force for good.  Whilst it has in the past, through ignorance and suspicion, led to misconceptions and misunderstandings about what it stands for, these are being steadily eroded as the public have a greater awareness of its principles and purpose.

Visit our Frequently Asked Questions page to find out a little bit more. This process is being accelerated by Freemasons across the country, by opening their doors and talking candidly about what they do, what principles guide their actions and how they see their role in society.

Charity Work

Whilst it’s true that Freemasons care for their own, we also care for others, by raising money, through personal donations, to our Masonic charities.

In turn, this money is donated as charitable donations to many worthwhile causes.  It is not generally known, but Freemason Charities are only second to the National Lottery in charitable giving.

Yorkshire Freemasons have contributed towards countless local good causes from supporting the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to building skateboard parks.  We have provided more than 20,000 teddy bears for children in hospital.

We have donated money to our cathedrals and our local hospices, and bought ambulances for the Red Cross.  Masonic charity ranges from buying a Christmas gift for the widow of a deceased member to supporting international disaster relief agencies.
