A Glimpse Behind the Chain of Office: Former Lord Mayor Shares Insights with the Lodge

On Tuesday 1 September 2026, members of the Lodge enjoyed a fascinating and good‑humoured presentation when W Bro Gerry Barker, former Lord Mayor of Bradford, shared an insider’s view of civic life, highlighting how the Lord Mayor’s responsibilities foster community cohesion and civic pride.

Speaking for around 35 minutes, W Bro Barker guided us through the traditions, expectations, and daily realities of serving as First Citizen of Bradford. Far from being a purely ceremonial figure, the Lord Mayor plays a vital part in representing the city, supporting local organisations, and acting as a unifying presence across communities, fostering pride in civic service.

He explained that the Lord Mayor presides over Council meetings, attends civic services, welcomes visiting dignitaries, and is called upon to speak at a wide variety of events — from school assemblies and charity fundraisers to major cultural celebrations. The role demands diplomacy, stamina, and a genuine commitment to public service.

Members particularly enjoyed his reflections on the charitable dimension of the mayoralty. Each Lord Mayor traditionally champions a number of local causes, helping raise both funds and awareness. He spoke warmly of the volunteers, community leaders, and everyday citizens he met during his term, describing these encounters as some of the most rewarding moments of his year in office.

He also offered a lighter look at civic life, sharing anecdotes about the chain of office, the formal robes, and the sometimes unpredictable nature of public engagements. These stories, full of personal insights, brought humour and humanity to a role often seen only through its ceremonial surface, inspiring members through relatable experiences.

Above all, his message was clear: the mayoralty is about service, visibility, and connection—emphasising the importance of community engagement to foster respect and appreciation for civic roles and support those who work for the good of the city.

The Lodge extended its sincere thanks to W Bro Barker for an enlightening and enjoyable talk that deepened our appreciation of the responsibilities carried by those who serve in this distinguished office.
